Where is the best source for new research, ideas, and insights on urban planning?
Could it be a Substack?
Last year, I was appointed as one of two Editors-in-Chief of the top urban planning journal in North America: the Journal of Planning Education & Research. What a ride it’s been!
I get to see my entire field from an elevated perch, help shape the kind of research that gets published, and lead a team of Associate, Early Career, Book Review, and Managing editors. I share these roles with my co-Editor, Lingqian (Ivy) Hu, the incoming Dean at the College of Architecture at Texas A&M.
The scholarship and innovative ideas that emerge from the journal have important real-world implications and have, over decades, shaped professional planning practice. But there are barriers to getting the word out about the profound and relevant research we publish in the journal, including website firewalls erected by journal publishers and the jargony writing style of many academics.
Ivy and I offer a solution: a Substack! Back in October 2024, we launched Ingenious Cities: The Latest in Urban Research & Innovation where we highlight a select number of studies published in the journal by retelling the results using accessible, concise, and engaging stories.
There’s no cost: so subscribe now and get the hottest news about cutting-edge research in urban planning! This is a bit of an experiment, so all feedback is welcome.
Thanks for reading.
Best,
Justin
There are a growing number of Substack newsletters on urbanism, cities, and related emotive topics, of varying sophistication. You’d better add a podcast and live video to stay ahead of the curve :).
