The Biggest Trends in Planning in 2025

Outerspace planning is one to watch!

Dear Readers,

The biggest and most prominent national organization for urban planners in the U.S., the American Planning Association, just recently released their 2025 Trend Report for Planners. This prescient bunch picked a whole bunch of topics that professional planners ought to have their eyes on, to be ready for the next big changes coming to the communities where they work.

Most impressive was their foresight to report on the burgeoning space industry as an emerging trend for planners. I was very pleased that they included an interview with me in their report. I was able to talk about my research on The First City on Mars and other ongoing collaborations I have around lunar cities and other Outerspace settlements.

For now, much of the planning around the Moon, Mars, and beyond is happening right here, safely on planet Earth. But urban planners have not, so far, been too involved. With our rich experience in designing and building human settlements, we really do have a lot to add. This report is an excellent reminder!
